Separate Plates and Frames Define the Filtration Space

Compare both filter area and chamber volume

In a plate-and-frame arrangement, plates support the filter medium and provide filtrate drainage, while separate frames provide space for retained solids. Feed passes through the medium, with solids accumulating during the filtration cycle.

Filter area helps define the available filtration surface. Chamber volume relates to how much retained cake the assembly can accommodate before discharge. Both matter when selecting equipment for a batch process.

Throughput and final clarity also depend on viscosity, solids loading, particle behavior, media and operating conditions. Model size alone does not establish a guaranteed flow rate.

Specify the Media, Materials and Operating Duty Together

Filter medium

The reference product describes filter cloth. If your process requires filter paper, depth sheets or a filter-aid precoat, confirm that the proposed plate pack supports that arrangement and the intended pressure.

Contact materials

The supplier describes SS304/316L plates and a stainless frame, while its summary also lists alternative beam materials. Request the grade and construction of the plates, frames, beams, fittings and seals separately.

Process conditions

Provide feed composition, temperature, viscosity and cleaning chemicals. Confirm corrosion compatibility, pressure and temperature limits for the complete assembly, including the medium and seals.

Define the required filtrate quality and an agreed trial or acceptance method. A micron or sterile-filtration rating cannot be inferred from the stainless steel construction.

Plan the Complete Batch Filtration Cycle

01

Prepare & close

Install and inspect the selected media and plate/frame sequence. Close and secure the assembly according to the equipment procedure.

02

Filter & monitor

Feed within the approved limits. Monitor pressure, filtrate quality and collection, using the agreed process endpoint for the batch.

03

Discharge & clean

Stop feed and verify depressurization before opening. Remove retained cake, inspect the media and seals, and clean for the next batch.

Include filling, filtration, cake discharge, media changes and cleaning when estimating production capacity. A hydraulic closing system, where specified, does not by itself provide membrane squeezing.

Match the Separation Task to the Application

Food, beverage, beer & wine

Discuss the product, particles to be removed, required clarity and cleaning routine. Confirm contact materials, media compatibility and acceptable product loss for the proposed process.

Chemical & pharmaceutical processes

Provide chemistry, solvent content where relevant, temperature and separation targets. For controlled processes, specify the required finish, cleaning method and supporting documentation.

The supplier identifies these application sectors. Suitability for a particular formulation, sterile process or regulated production step requires a project-specific review.

Choose the Configuration by Duty and Model Data

This BAQ/BAY series

Use this page for the 320, 450 and 630 mm plate families, with separate plate/frame counts, chamber volumes and 1–30 m² of published filtration area.

BASJL stainless series

The related stainless steel filter press page lists BASJL400/600 models with a different specification table. Compare construction, media and process requirements before treating them as alternatives.

Recessed chamber presses

For cake-focused dewatering, compare recessed chamber equipment using slurry test results, cycle requirements and cake handling. Solids concentration alone is not a universal selection rule.

Plate and Frame Filter Press FAQs

What is the difference between a plate-and-frame and a recessed chamber press?

Plate-and-frame equipment uses separate plates and frames to create the solids-retention space. Recessed chamber equipment forms that space with recessed plates. Select between them using the medium, slurry behavior, cake handling and complete process requirements.

Can this press achieve 0.1-micron or sterile filtration?

The supplier does not substantiate a fixed 0.1-micron rating or sterile-filtration guarantee for these models. Define the separation target, select compatible media and verify performance under the intended operating conditions.

Is the whole machine made from SS316L?

Do not assume that from the product name. The source names SS304/316L plates and a stainless frame but also lists beam material alternatives. Specify and confirm materials for each component in the quotation.

What is the difference between BAQ and BAY?

The supplier table lists separate model families, including different dimensions and weights, but does not explain the prefix meanings. Ask for confirmation of the closing mechanism, drive and included equipment for the selected model.

Can it be cleaned in place or steam sterilized?

CIP or steam compatibility must be confirmed for the exact equipment, media, seals and cleaning procedure. Removable stainless components alone do not establish either capability.

How should I select a model and estimate throughput?

Start with batch volume, solids content, feed properties and required filtrate quality. Compare area and chamber volume, then assess filtration and handling times. Request a sample trial when performance cannot be established from existing process data.
